Reducing Regulatory Burden On Business Important For Economic Recovery
October 7, 2021(Toronto – October 7, 2021) – Today, Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) released the following statement in reaction to the Government of Ontario’s Fall Red Tape Reduction Package:
“We know that Ontario’s economic recovery will be largely driven by the private sector. Even in good times, business owners encounter challenges at various stages of growth. Real progress can come from redoubling efforts to modernize and streamline outdated regulations.
“We welcome the government’s continued commitment to creating a more competitive business environment through its bi-annual red tape reduction bills. These measures can help support economic recovery by accelerating business growth, advancing innovative solutions, and attracting investment.
“In particular, we are pleased to see certain measures in this bill that will support a more competitive Ontario, such as:
- A commitment to make cannabis delivery and curbside pick up permanent for retailers
- Allowing multi-unit buildings to choose suite metering services to reduce their electricity costs
- Increased flexibility for colleges to offer online training and a wider array of credentials
- Streamlining environmental permissions for low-risk activities
- Continued expansion of online access to government services and transactions for businesses and non-profits
“Some of the measures will require extensive consultation with the private sector to ensure health, safety, and environmental protection. Meanwhile, it is equally important for the government to avoid adding new regulatory burdens for businesses, as currently being proposed with regard to privacy. We look forward to working with the government on both these fronts.”
