Ontario Chamber of Commerce Urges Next Provincial Government to Stand Up for Trade Interests
May 31, 2018Toronto, May 31, 2018 – Today, Rocco Rossi, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce released the following statement in response to the recent steel and aluminium tariffs imposed by the US government.
“The Ontario Chamber of Commerce is shocked and dismayed by the imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium. These tariffs will have a detrimental and immediate impact on our joint trade economies in North America. At stake are billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs across both countries.
“With the election just a week away, trade is a top priority for Ontario businesses and we hope that all party leaders address how they will work to defend Ontario’s interests. We urge the next provincial government to stand up for our joint interests by exploring the formation of positive bilateral cooperation with our American neighbours. We further support a coordinated national response with the federal government and other provinces. This will ensure that trade between the US and Canada remains strong and without interruption.
“We have been actively working with state chambers on the importance of trade between the US and Canada. As Ontario’s Business Advocate, we are committed to working with our membership, US State Chambers, and Ontario’s next government to ensure prosperity for both our economies.”
