Housing Affordability Critical to Ontario’s Business Success
March 30, 2022(Toronto – March 30, 2022) – Today, Daniel Safayeni, Vice President of Policy at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, released the following statement in response to the Government of Ontario’s More Homes for Everyone plan:
“Access to affordable housing is essential to attracting, retaining, and developing a diverse and productive workforce. The growing mismatch between housing supply and demand in communities across Ontario has made it more difficult for employers to fill labour shortages, particularly as the global competition for talent heats up. We are encouraged that the government has introduced a comprehensive plan to remove red tape, increase accountability, improve data sharing, and focus on the supply of ‘missing middle’ housing.
“The Ontario Chamber Network has advocated for many of the measures proposed in this package. Collaboration and consultation with municipalities are a core part of this plan, but it should not come at the expense of moving swiftly with reforms. Given the urgent need for additional housing supply, we encourage the government to balance consultation with bold actions such as taking action on exclusionary zoning.
“We look forward to working with the Governments of Ontario on this and other matters important to Ontario business.”
