Presenting: The Corporate Citizen Award Finalists

The Corporate Citizen Award recognizes a large business who has a sustained and long-term commitment to investing in the community in which it operates.

Finalist #1: Cameco

Industry: Nuclear Power

What does being an OBAA finalist mean to you?

Cameco strives to be not only an economic but environmentally and socially responsible of the communities in which we operate. It would be an honour to be recognized for our contributions, an honour we would share with our employees who make this possible through their contributions and dedication.

How does your organization positively contribute to Ontario’s economy?

In each of our four operations in Ontario, Cameco is a significant economic contributor, both directly through salaries, wages, and local procurement, and indirectly through secondary employment and secondary economic activity. Cameco continues to focus on local spending with 70% procured from local, Ontario-based businesses. Each operation continues to enjoy high levels of public support in locations where we operate.

What can we expect to see from your organization in the years to come?

Cameco is one of the world’s largest providers of the uranium fuel needed to generate clean, reliable baseload electricity around the globe. Since 1980, global electricity consumption has tripled, and is forecast to increase by 70% over the next two decades. The nuclear power industry is driven by demand for energy and Cameco’s vision is to meet this demand and energize the world as the global leader of fuel supply for clean air nuclear power.

“The biggest reasons behind Cameco’s success are our people, those that work here today and have over the years. They have commitment, energy, hard work and creativity that is unmatched and appreciated. They live our values showing integrity, a commitment to safety and a dedication to supporting each other..”

Dale Clark, Vice-president, Cameco fuel services division

Finalist #2: Hydro Ottawa

Industry: Electricity Distribution

What does being an OBAA finalist mean to you?

At Hydro Ottawa we believe that being a good corporate citizen knows no borders. Whether 2,000 km away, or in our own backyard, we have a proud tradition of being a good neighbour and contributing to the quality of life in communities near and far. We know that the recognition that comes with being an Ontario Business Achievement Awards finalist will shine a light on the great responsibility that comes with opportunity and resources, and will set an example for other organizations to follow.

Capital Fair – Special Needs Day

How does your organization positively contribute to Ontario’s economy?

We strongly believe that the next generation represents the future of our company and of all utilities. Our Powerline Technician Diploma Program, the only program of its kind in Eastern Ontario, is a collaborative effort with Algonquin College and leverages the experience of our retirees to develop the next-generation of highly skilled Powerline Technicians for Hydro Ottawa and all of Ontario.

In addition to sustaining Ontario’s utilities workforce, we are the largest Ontario-based municipally owned producer of green power.  The green energy produced through our fleet of hydroelectric, landfill gas-to-energy and solar generating stations, is sold back into the grid.

Ottawa Community Housing Volunteer Day

What can we expect to see from your organization in the years to come?

Hydro Ottawa will continue to provide a balance between solid performance in our existing operations, adaptation to the disruption in our industry, being a responsible corporate citizen and a customer-centric organization. As such, our core mission and mandate will remain the same: we will continue to create value for our shareholder, our customers and our community by providing a safe, reliable and affordable supply of electricity. We will continue to play a leading role in helping the City of Ottawa transition to a smart energy future and our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen will not waiver.
