Ontario Chamber Welcomes Government Action to Streamline Mining Project Approvals
April 22, 2025(TORONTO– April 22, 2025) – Today, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s President and CEO, Daniel Tisch, issued the following statement in response to the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, Ontario’s new legislation to streamline approval processes for mining and resource development projects.
“Ontario can be a global mining leader, and the government’s new bill can help us achieve that ambition. A streamlined, modern, and competitive permitting system will greatly enhance our competitiveness, provided that it ensures environmental integrity and upholds Indigenous and treaty rights.
“We welcome the plan to set clear service standards for permitting, along with transparent, public performance metrics. This will reduce costs, speed up projects and attract the investment we need.
“Ontario must continue addressing regulatory overlap and duplication between the federal and provincial governments. A fragmented, uncoordinated permitting landscape remains a barrier that harms our competitiveness. That’s why the Ontario Chamber’s Mining Council urges the government to adopt a single consultation process that enables community engagement on multiple permits under a unified timeline, and clearly delineates responsibilities between levels of government.
“Finally, we encourage close collaboration with industry, Indigenous communities, municipalities, and civil society. We look forward to working with government to advance this important work.”
