Ontario Chamber of Commerce Welcomes U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on U.S. Tariffs
February 20, 2026(TORONTO – February 20, 2026) – The Ontario Chamber of Commerce welcomes the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the use of U.S. tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down the Trump administration’s emergency tariffs will be widely welcomed by Canadian businesses, since we operate within a highly integrated North American economy,” said Daniel Tisch, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.
“The decision confirms that America remains a country of laws, and that tariffs cannot be imposed capriciously to punish nations or industries that displease the president, or to reward those who find his favour,” Tisch added.
The OCC recognizes that the U.S. administration can still continue its mutually destructive trade war by imposing tariffs through other channels, but we hope it will heed the advice of the vast majority of U.S. businesses that seek fewer barriers, not more, to doing business with Ontario and Canada, America’s most important customers and partners.
The OCC calls on the Canadian, U.S. and Mexican governments to prioritize the renewal of CUSMA as a legally binding, trilateral agreement, recognizing its tremendous benefit to businesses, workers and communities in all three countries.
