As Clock Ticks Toward Tariff Deadline, NY and Ontario Business Leaders Urge Resolution
June 30, 2025(TORONTO – June 30, 2025) – As Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day approach this week, the Business Council of New York State (BCNYS) and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) today issued a joint statement urging a swift resolution to trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, a reversal of tariffs imposed since January, and the launch of an orderly review of the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement (USMCA).
“New York and Ontario are two linchpins of the integrated North American economy, and we hear one message from our members: today’s trade uncertainty is bad for business, workers and communities.
“At the recent G7 meeting, Prime Minister Carney and President Trump wisely committed to a mid-July deadline to reach a deal on the recent trade disputes. We urge their governments to act with urgency, and to deliver a resolution that restores the certainty and confidence we have enjoyed under the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement.
“Once the immediate issues are resolved, we look forward to an orderly, constructive review of the USMCA. Our organizations remain strong supporters of the agreement negotiated under the previous Trump administration, and firm opponents of tariffs that raise costs for industries and consumers, threaten jobs, and destabilize the highly integrated supply chains that power North America’s economy.
The OCC and BCNYS stand ready to support both governments in restoring stability and strengthening our cross-border economic ties – for mutual benefit.”
